With her recently-filed wrongful termination lawsuit against Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry still ongoing, it appears that actress Nicollette Sheridan is getting litigious again. This time, she plans to drag all of America into the courtroom on charges of negligence.
Sheridan, 46, has filed a suit in a Los Angeles court suing every person in the United States for not seeing her 2007 film Code Name: The Cleaner. The movie, which starred comedian Cedric the Entertainer as an amnesic janitor who believes he’s a secret agent, featured Sherdian in the supporting role of femme fatale Diane. Lucy Liu and Mark Dacascos also starred in the film, which recouped only $10 million of its $20-million budget during its theatrical run.
“Ms. Sheridan believes that the citizens of America wrongfully ignored Code Name: The Cleaner,” said a representative for the actress. “The box office failure of that film has caused her a great deal of pain and suffering, not to mention an inability to seek further big screen partnerships with Entertainers, Cedric or otherwise.”
Sheridan is seeking upwards of $100 million in damages, or what she believes the box office gross of The Cleaner “likely would have been” had audiences gone to see it, according to her representative.
Many Americans were surprised to learn they had been named in the suit. Samantha Benjamin of Austin, Texas, said she didn’t willfully avoid the film, but rather had never even heard of it.
“The Code Name Cleaner? That’s a movie? I don’t think I should be sued for that,” Benjamin said. “How much will I have to pay?”
“I didn’t even see that movie,” said co-star Lucy Liu. “I think it was the title that kept me away.” Liu was also the star of Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever.
“We’re hoping that this lawsuit will force audiences to take Ms. Sheridan seriously as an actress,” her representative said, “By court order, of course.” Sheridan has also starred in such films as The Karate Dog and .com For Murder.
“Ms. Sheridan wants to move on with her life and put this all behind her. Just as soon as she receives her $100 million.”
