It’s been quite some time since Robert De Niro has completely owned the big screen. In recent years, the acting giant’s career has been on cruise control, it seems, sleeping through knockoffs of his past work (Righteous Kill, for the loss) and tapping into his softer side (Everybody’s Fine). Not that he has anything left to prove, of course; his staggering resume speaks for itself. But it’d be a nice change of pace to see the legend reach back into his bag of magic tricks.
Perhaps he’s found his way back into that zone with Lombardi, a just-announced biopic about renown Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi, who ran the team’s on-field moves from 1959-1967 and won five championships in the process. Per Risky Business’ report, De Niro has signed on to play the title role, naturally, in ESPN Films’ feature, which will bring Eric Roth’s script to life. Roth is no filmography-slouch himself, having written Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Munich and The Insider.
The National Football League will be involved, and, reportedly, the plan is to premiere the film in theater between the AFC and NFC conference championship games and the Super Bowl in 2012.
