Avatar director James Cameron came away the big winner at the Scientific & Technical Awards handed out by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Feb. 20 at the Beverly Wilshire. Cameron, who is also nominated for best director at the upcoming Oscar ceremony, took home the coveted Huge Douche-Bag Award given to the industry’s biggest jerk for 2009-2010 season.

“I would like to say I’m surprised I won, but that’s hardly the case,” says Cameron, whose big budget film, Avatar, is nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards, which will be held on March 7. “I rock harder than anybody. It’s not a coincidence that both Avatar and Titanic are two of the biggest movies ever made. It’s because I have a vision. I have the innate ability to accomplish great things and this award is proof of it.”

Cameron was predicted to capture the prize against competition considered to be less douche-y than the acclaimed director. Also nominated for the award was Eddie Murphy, Sean Penn (who captured last year’s prize) and Uwe Boll. Jennifer Lopez was also nominated, giving The Wedding Planer actress three straight nominations.

“I could tell you it’s an honor just to be nominated but that would be complete bullshit,” says Lopez. “I worked hard to get a nasty reputation for being needlessly smug and it’s a shame to see that go to waste. Just like my latest album.”

Though saddened by the loss, Lopez spoke highly of Cameron. “It’s hard to top Jim Cameron when it comes to making movies and being one arrogant self-important prick.”

Not everyone was so enamored with Cameron. Elizabeth Banks, who hosted the ceremony, was left disappointed by her brief exchange with the director on stage, saying the 55-year-old was “gracious” and “pleasant.”

Others however, said the Canadian-born movie-maker was a “huge asshole” including Academy President Tom Sherak.

“I’m still shocked at how much Jim is a dick,” said Sherak. “He’s truly a slice of the best of Hollywood. If he could clone himself, I bet he would make love to his clone while in those funny blue suits, film it in 3D and make 4 zillion dollars.”

When asked why the Huge Douche-Bag Award was given during the Sci-Tech Awards, an event which normally honors the technical innovators behind the camera, Sherak laughed. “It’s the Sci-Techs; nobody gives a shit.”
