The combination of Deadwood creator David Milch and dynamite filmmaker Michael Mann is sure to be something special, a hopefully airtight truth that HBO also believes: Milch and Mann have been developing a new series for the cable network called Luck, set in the cutthroat world of horse-racing. The project is scheduled to go in front of cameras by the end of this month, and should be on track for a January 2011 premiere.

Now, the show has its first star in Dustin Hoffman, who will play a gambler/ex-con. On the back-end, yet still strong, are the additional casting announcements of Dennis Farina as Hoffman’s friend and driver, and John Ortiz (who played the bad guy in Mann’s 2006 film Miami Vice) as a Peruvian horse trainer.
