Sorry, random folks who have been impatiently waiting for Wanted 2—–the project appears to be on the shelf. Why? Because Angelina Jolie has backed out of the 2008 hit’s long-discussed sequel. Her excuse, however, is both valid and awesome: as New York’s Vulture reports, she’s signed on to star in the great Alfonso Cuaron’s next picture, a space thriller called Gravity. Written by the Mexican director’s 28-year-old son, Jonas, Gravity will be produced by Legendary Pictures and David Heyman (he of the Harry Potter franchise), under Warner Bros. The project was originally developed at Universal with Jolie attached, but eventually made its way over to its new home.
Jolie will star as the only surviving member of a space exploration team who’s trying to make her way back home to Earth. Word is that she’ll be the only person on screen for the majority of the film’s running time, though she’ll be pulling double duty, also playing her own daughter. Certainly brings to mind Sam Rockwell’s work in last year’s solid Moon.
The real draw here, of course, is Cuaron, who’s earned his stellar reputation in gold after such gems as Y Tu Mama Tambien and the magnificent Children of Men. Frankly, I’d watch the man direct a chess match at this point.
