Hot off the heels of yesterday’s Contagion announcement (Steven Soderbergh’s A-list-casted viral outbreak thriller) comes word, via The Playlist, that Penelope Cruz could be in talks to star in controversial Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier‘s next project, the disaster-drama Melancholia, which is currently set for a shoot split between Sweden and Germany later this year. According to Zentropa Entertainment co-founder Peter Aalbaek Jensen, Melancholia ”will use some special effects, but nothing compared to Hollywood.” Adds Von Trier himself, randomly, “No more happy endings!” I’ll drink to that.
The film’s title is in reference to its setting, Planet Melancholia, a dangerous planet that hovers a bit too close to Earth. No other information on the project is available at the moment, unfortunately.
The sick mind behind last year’s polarizing (and, if I may add, badass) Antichrist recruiting Academy Award darling, and always-welcome eye candy, Penelope Cruz for a science fiction disaster flick? Now there’s one hell of a sales pitch. Let’s just hope it’s true.
