Unexpected: Hollywood Loses ‘Terminator’ Rights

The ‘Terminator’ War Continues…

A few days back I was certain that Sony was going to win the bidding war for the rights to the Terminator franchise; they have the funding to be able to yank it right out of Lionsgate’s hands. However, it seems I was wrong: Lionsgate and Sony basically had a furious tennis match for the rights until the auction closed yesterday, and neither came out the victor.

Instead, former owners Halcyon accepted a $29.5 million bid from Pacificor, a Santa Barbara hedge-fund group.

Seriously. Why didn’t James Cameron swoop in with the killing he just made from Avatar, purchase the damn thing and then put the baby to bed?

According to /Film, Halcyon will continue to make a profit as well: “As part of the deal, Halcyon will keep the revenue streams from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Salvation, and will receive $5 million for every Terminator movie produced in the future.”
