Pitt/Jolie-Less ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Prequel is Given the Green Light
Prequel to 2005 Hit ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ is Officially Underway
The steadily growing world of Hollywood prequels now has one more resident. New York’s Vulture reports that Akiva Goldmsman will oversee Mr. and Mrs. Jones, a sort-of reboot of the 2005 action-comedy blockbuster Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Only, this time there’ll be no Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie, which makes sense; there’s no need for Pitt to give that Benjamin Button technology another try in the name of computer-generated youth.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith starred real-life lovers Pitt and Jolie as an everyday husband and wife pair each concealing the same secret (both are hired assassins) without the other knowing the truth. For Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Goldsman and company plan to introduce a new guy/girl duo of secret agents that are assigned to act as a married couple. As Vulture points out, this reeks of Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, but one would hope that a guy as prolific as Goldsman can steer clear of such a catastrophe. After all, his production credits include I Am Legend and Fox’s awesome Fringe, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Should be good enough to assuage fears, no?
