The New Universal Studios ‘King Kong’ Ride Sounds Freaking Amazing

Peter Jackson Brings Us ‘King Kong’ 3D

The Jaws ride has always been my favorite Universal Studios attraction — who could beat it? Jaws is one of my favorite films of all time — but a close runner-up was King Kong. Something about that giant animatronic ape shaking my train car rubbed me the right way (ahem).

Sadly, the King Kong ride was destroyed by the Universal backlot fire of last year. However, director Peter Jackson has teamed up with theme park designers to create a ride that not only sounds like it’ll blow the lid off of interactive rides, but also beat the original attraction at its own game.

“The new Kong attraction, described by Universal Studios as the largest 3-D exhibit in the world, will debut this summer at the height of tourist season.

If the new technology works as designed, park visitors will not only see Kong in three dimensions but also smell his banana breath, feel the gust of wind as he jumps over the guests and sense the ground quake when the ape engages aTyrannosaurus rex in a life-or-death battle. The Kong attraction will be one stop on the park’s back lot studio tour ride.

During a recent preview of the technology, a dirty, battle-scarred Kong stared menacingly out from two 180-foot-long by 40-foot-tall screens that wrap around the trams that will carry visitors. In another scene, a 35-foot-tall T. rex stepped over the trams, turned to the audience and bared its massive teeth.”

Some of the scenes in the ride will be 3D derivations of Peter Jackson’s King Kong, which is okay by me: some of those renderings are still among the best CGI we’ve seen yet. Of course, Joe Letteri, the visual effects supervisor for the film, had to get his little plug in: “It’s going to feel like Avatar but it will be happening all around you.”
