The Next Jason Bourne Film is a Prequel/Reboot?
Matt Damon is Skeptical of the Bourne Franchise’s Future
Although I was literally just exposed to The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum last week, I was struck by how concisely a story was told over the course of three films. Is a fourth entry even necessary? Where could they go from here?
According to Bourne himself, Matt Damon, the answer is backwards: “There’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one, just because I think we’re probably another five years away from doing it – we’ve got to get a script.”
The implication here is that A. Because a script has taken so long to come together and B. Because Supremacy and Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass has left the project, Damon’s future with the franchise is doubtful. A recasting at this point would be a pity.
But honestly, what elements of Jason Bourne’s past that we haven’t seen could compose a good prequel? Bourne was in his twenties in Identity, so stepping any further backward seems like a horrible idea. What’s more interesting is the notion that Damon wants this prequel to be an interim film while Greengrass and a script come back into the fold for Bourne 4.
What audience will buy this? Who will grow attached to a new Bourne for one outing, only to return to Damon for the film they wanted (or didn’t want) in the first place?
