William Shatner “wouldn’t mind” being in ‘Star Trek 2′

Shatner is asked if he would be interested in the sequel to ‘Star Trek’

rl_shatnerDespite not being included in Star Trek, the original James T. Kirk, William Shatner, wouldn’t mind being a part of the sequel to the J.J. Abrams franchise reboot.

In an interview with shock jock Howard Stern this week, Shatner was asked if he was trying to land himself a cameo in the film. Shatner’s response? “I wouldn’t mind,” says the 78-year-old.

When asked about the low-down on the lack of Shatner in Star Trek, he said it would have been tough to break through the canon. “I would have loved to have been part of this historic event. But how do you bring back to life that is dead? I died, my character died,” he said.

Last year, Star Trek scribes Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman were asked about the original Shatner cameo that never came to fruition. “We had a scene with Shatner,” said Orci. “We wrote it, it was in the script.”

“The very last scene when Spock and Spock meet each other, finally,” says Kurtzma. And elder Spock is convincing young Spock that he couldn’t interfere, because it would have diverted [Kirk and Spock] away from their friendship. And that their friendship is the key to the whole sort of shebang. He [elder Spock] said, ‘Don’t take my word for it.’ And he handed him [younger Spock] a little holographic device and it projected Shatner. It was basically a Happy Birthday wish knowing that Spock was going to go off to Romulus, and Kirk would probably be dead by the time.”

Abrams invited the actor for a private screening of the movie at the Paramount Theater in L.A.

The still-untitled Star Trek 2 will arrive in theaters on June 29, 2012.
