Make It Or Break It (Season One, Volume One) – DVD Review
Make It Or Break It (Season One, Volume One) – DVD Review
I’m going to be completely honest here. I did not tackle this series because I thought it could actually be decent as it’s given law most anything on ABC Family will be close to unbearable. See folks, I gave into that little devil inside of me, the one that has an appetite for women. I mean, look at that cover, with all those pretty, young bodies in tight uniforms.
That sound you hear is me about to be taken away by the proper authorities, but they’ve allowed me to finish this review, which might be my last for a while (hold your applause.) “Make It Or Break It” is essentially every single family-oriented sports show ever made. There’s the one who’s totally dedicated, the spoiled and undertalented one, the new kid with exceptional talent, and the tough chick of the group.
The show wants to be edgy, and tries to convince itself that it is. Also, anyone who’s just looking for something to put on for their teens will also be tricked into it, but don’t be fooled. And really, that’s all I have to say. Most likely, it’ll serve it’s target audience, but in the end, most of us who desire something like “The Wire” should stay far far away.
And for those wondering, I rank the ladies like this: Josie Loren, Ayla Kell, Cassie Scerbo, and Chelsea Hobbs.
6/10
The Video
Coming at us in 1.78:1 ratio, “Make It Or Break It” looks terrific on this transfer. Colors are bright and crisp, with black levels never presenting any problems. The glittery glow of the image sparkles here on this set. Like the series, fans should be pleased.
8/10
The Audio
Overall, the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track is terrific at capturing the dialogue and sound effects present in the show. There are times where the audio drops and that can be troublesome. Otherwise, there’s no real complaints about this.
7/10
The Extras
“Making It” is the first extra that runs around nine minutes and details the actresses experience with gymnastics as well as the use of stunt doubles and training. While they don’t skimp on behind-the-scenes stuff, this is mostly promotional and self-serving.
Six deleted scenes are next and have a combined running time of ten minutes. There’s one where a character finds out something about herself much earlier than in the real show, the rest were obviously cut for time. These are the type where you can take them or leave them and were obviously cut for time.
I don’t know whether to be surprised or not that the features are scarce, but honestly you could have excluded them no one would notice. It’s nice to have them here, but ultimately they left me cold. Fans won’t care though.
4/10
Overall
Clearly I’m not the target audience for this, so it should come as no surprise I wasn’t floored by the content. If you’re in the mood for something with pretty girls who bend and twist, or something that lacks any real plot, then this might be for you. Otherwise there’s no need to really gobble this up. Fans will be pleased with the look of the show and some of the sound, but the extras leave much to be desired. If you’re a fan, purchase it and any interested parties should at least rent it. And now, I’ll be taken off to jail.
