It’s hard to believe today, but there once was a time when Gerard Butler was poised to be the best thing to happen to ass-kicking cinema since the days 1980s-days of Kurt Russell. Which came full circle when Butler’s name was briefly pegged alongside an Escape from New York remake, though that was fortunately scrapped. The second that 300 extended beyond $100 million worth of box office receipts, Butler had the action genre at his fingertips; who could have guessed that he’d jump the shark and start committing to a series of dreadful-sounding romantic comedies (P.S. I Love You, The Ugly Truth and the soon-to-suck The Bounty Hunter)? His post-300 career hasn’t been all bad, with his co-starring role in Guy Ritchie’s slick RocknRolla having earned Butler a small amount of good will, as did the financial success of last year’s Law Abiding Citizen.

If Deadline Hollywood’s report proves legit, and Butler has indeed jumped aboard, Machine Gun Preacher, a “based on true events” thriller to be directed by Marc Forster, could be the Scottish actor’s most interesting film yet. The script, developed by Forster and Jason Keller, follows the real-life tale of Sam Childers, a motorcycle-riding drug dealer who finds God and then decides to help Sudanese kids who’ve been forced into child soldier duties. Childers’s saga first intrigued Keller and producer Robbie Brenner after they watch an NBC Dateline news piece on his exploits in Sudan, which then brought his memoir, Another Man’s War: The True Story of One Man’s Battle to Save Children in Sudan, to their attention.

Assuming that Forster and company can sidestep ever-possible pre-production hiccups, Machine Gun Preacher still won’t get underway until Butler finishes work later this year on Coriolanus, a Shakespeare adaptation that’ll also be Ralph Fiennes’s directorial debut. They’ve already secured a “Best Movie Title” mention for whatever year the film comes out; seriously, under different circumstances, how great would a Machine Gun Preacher directed by Quentin Taraninto be?

It's difficult to take you seriously when you post things like "the Aussie actor, " a fact not only easy to check but it's widely known, the man is a Scot. In fact, it may be the single most known and important to know thing about him.

  2. I love how people can never be kind about mistakes. You could bring it to the author's attention and say "please fix this." It's take less time out of your day.
