Most likely due to lifelong horror-loving side, a highpoint of my Avatar theater experience was catching a surprise trailer for Piranha 3-D (seriously, how in the hell did it manage to bypass an online leak? In this day and age, that’s some James Bond-like craftiness.).
There’s no doubt that such enthusiasm is the minority, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of; for my money, 3-D technology is best suited for the horror genre. It’s the sole reason why last year’s My Bloody Valentine 3-D served up one of 2009′s guiltiest pleasures: the sight of ’80s horror favorite Tom Atkins’s eyeball zipping toward the screen (the smallest touches can leave the biggest stains). With that sensibility intact, the prospect of seeing hundreds of killer fish flying toward my plastic magic glasses is of course worthy of attention, as is the film’s randomly badass cast (Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Eli Roth and Christopher Lloyd) and the film’s potential to pardon French splatter maven, and Piranha 3-D director, Alexandre Aja for 2007′s abysmal Mirrors.
Granted, the trailer itself, which has yet to properly debut online, displays an overwhelming amount of cheese, but the behind-the-scenes pictures that a crew member posted earlier today, found here, reenergize the anticipation. Amongst the dozens of shots include a close-up of the film’s piranha design and an arsenal of gory makeup effects, which should placate anyone who’s been wondering if Alex Aja could ever recapture the ferocity of 2003′s High Tension (Haute Tension).
Piranha 3-D, a remake of Joe Dante’s campy 1978 cult film, is set for an April 16 release. Here’s to its fun level trumping all implausibilities and narrative handicaps.

Definite crock. You missed out.
Lately, when I ask people if they've seen 'Avatar', the response I get is, "Yes! Did you see the trailer for that Piranha movie!?!?"
