Daniel Craig to replace Robert Downey Jr. in new comic book movie

58516090British actor Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace) is in talks to replace the recently departed Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming Cowboys & Aliens.

Downey reportedly left the project to focus on a sequel to Sherlock Holmes.

The change in lead hasn’t derailed the project as director Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2) will helm the actioner.

The story revolves around an extraterrestrial species landing in Arizona in the mid-1800s. The aliens plan to enslave humanity and the cowboys and native Apache unite to fight the alien menace.

Cowboys & Aliens is based on the 2006 graphic novel series by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. The story has been adapted for film by Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen scribes Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci with Damon Lindelof producing.

Craig will play the role of cowboy Zeke Jackson.

Cowboys & Aliens has a summer 2011 release.
