Steven Seagal talks ‘Machete’ and the evils of “cartoon-like” action

Seagal covers the deeper messages in ‘Machete’

rl_stevensSince we received word of Steven Seagal’s casting in Robert Rodriguez’s feature-length version of the faux-grindhouse trailer of Machete, we’ve been pretty excited. Why? Because we have had a deep yearning desire to see the early ’90s action star do something cool. (Check out the pics of Seagal on the set with Jessica Alba.)

In a recent interview, Seagal talked about the production and themes in the film:

“It’s another one of those pulp movies that Robert has created,” says Seagal. “I play a bad guy in the movie and Danny Trejo plays a good guy. And even though it’s larger than life and kind of crazy and wacky, in a way it also addresses sensitive issues such as racial profiling and prejudice and how people can and do work together in different situations.”

He added: “It was a fun movie for me to work on and I thought Robert Rodriguez was once again an amazing, talented professional who is very creative and brilliant in his very different approach in not only directing but also filmmaking in general.”

Hey Steven! What do you think about the use of CGI and other special effects to help “enhance” the action?

“These days they are not really using actors that can perform any of the action that they are pretending to do,” said the 57-year-old. “It becomes bigger than life with huge special effects, wire work and just a lot of things that have nothing to do with reality. In many ways they become cartoon-like and I guess many people like that kind of thing. I myself like the movies where what you see on the screen is something that has actually happened in real life [from] real heroic characters. This is the trend that I would like to see the genre move back to.”

Machete opens on April 16th.
