‘Avatar’ earns $3.5 million at midnight screenings, unable to approach ‘New Moon’
‘Avatar’ on pace with box office earnings
James Cameron’s Avatar grossed an estimated $3.5 million during its initial run of midnight screenings. While somewhat impressive, the film did not approach the record set by New Moon in November with $26.27 million in 3,514 theaters for a per-theater average of $7,476.
Avatar opened in about 2,000 screens, over 1,500 fewer theaters than the Twilight sequel, for its midnight debut, with most of those screens in 3D. The film will open today in over 3,400 theaters, with close to 3,000 screens shown in 3D and close to another 3,000 screens in 2D.
Fox domestic distribution chief Bruce Snyder said the Friday matinee grosses were, “exploding.” “That tells me this is going to be a real moviegoers’ picture, not just a movie for the fans,” says Snyder.
Avatar is a huge gamble for 20th Century Fox. The visually amazing event was created with a staggering budget of $250 million. Most analysts expect the film to earn that back during Avatar’s domestic release alone.
I just watched New Moon a few days ago and the only reason I didn't walk out is because I saw it for free. I thought it was lacking a good storyline and is only 1/4 of how good the book is (im sure, although I haven't read the book). I think the Twilight saga is a bunch over-rated and hopefully Avatar will come out strong because a lot of people say "its amazing."
