‘Lord of the Rings’ to finally debut on Blu-ray amid fan anger
Fans are pissed over new Lord of the Rings Blu-ray set
Arguably the most anticipated series to arrive on Blu-ray will finally do so on April 6th in the U.S.
Warner Home Video has revealed that Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy will be packaged as a whopping nine-disc set with all three films and more than seven hours of bonus material. The set will include the theatrical versions of the films with the special features that were presented on earlier DVD versions of the movies.
Lame sauce.
Film School Rejects pointed out that this may merely be the first wave of LOTR Blu-fever with more, we hope, on the way:
“What is evident from this announcement is that this will not be the final, essential Blu-ray release of LOTR. This release will not include the “extended” versions of the films, which were released separately from the original DVDs. This includes the gigantic 250-minute version of Return of the King, which would have no problem fitting onto any one of the 9 discs in the box set.”
Amazon currently has the set priced at $69.99. Check out the low star rating. Those scores are usually reserved for DVDs from The Asylum.
“I was expecting something like this from George Lucas, but this really is beyond bad taste,” wrote one reviewer on Amazon. “W/ Blu-ray technology, they could’ve managed to fit both versions of the films on [one] disc. I will wait for the special editions. For trying to gouge my wallet, one star is all you get!”
Another reviewer writes: “Don’t buy. This is an outrage … [the studio] is tricking you into buying this release and then re-buying [the] extended [version] when it releases.”
And another: “This packaging attempt is blatant double-dipping and we will not have it!”
Here’s the trailer:
