James Cameron keen on more ‘Avatar’ movies, budget would be reduced on sequels

James Cameron has story for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 ready to go

rl_jamescam_avatAt a press conference in London, Avatar director James Cameron talked more about the proposed sequels to the big-budget film event. If Avatar performs well at the box office, the possibility of two more sequels could come to fruition. Since Avatar was rumored to cost around $250 million, could two more movies of this nature be simply too expensive to produce?

“…in terms of the pitch it was: OK, you’ve spent a lot of money on the first one; on the second one we’ll be able to amortize it [the CG assets] and focus on the story and all that … and they bought that,” says Cameron regarding the assets and technology that has already been produced for the first film. Having these in place would make follow-ups cheaper to make and could increase profit margins for the studio.

Cameron, who also wrote Avatar, said that an ongoing storyline has already been “worked out” for a second and third entry in the series. Fox would not comment on plans for a larger franchise.

Last month, Sam Worthington spoke about more Avatar movies, saying he would “94 by the time [the trilogy] finishes.”
