Adrien Brody is not what most people think of when words like “action hero,” “bad ass” or “cool” are thrown around. But maybe it should?
Brody, along with a cadre of other stars, is cast in the upcoming Predators film from Robert Rodriguez protege Nimród Antal. The director sounded off on the controversial pick for the film’s lead and tells readers that this is the face of the new hero. Wanting a muscle-bound “Ah-nuld?” Get with the times!
“I think when we cast Adrien, there were a lot of people going, ‘What?’ but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that,” Antal claimed. “So we decided early on to go in a very different direction as far as the casting process, but it turned out fantastic.”
“He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they’re not ‘yolked-out’ Schwarzenegger-looking guys,” the director later stated about Brody’s character. “They’re all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it’s going to play well.”
Antal also revealed that the new Predators will maintain some parts of the original movies: “…we are trying to stay with the original as far as the monster and the atmosphere and the tone of the film, but we are trying to do something new and contemporary and feels fresh,” he says.
On original Predator star Arnold Schwarzenegger having a cameo in the film, Antal isn’t going to ruin any surprises: “Time will tell. We’ll see…”
Brody will star with Danny Trejo, Alice Braga, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Walton Goggins, UFC fighter Oleg Taktarov, and Topher Grace.
Predators is set to arrive in theaters on July 7, 2010.
