Is the Nintendo Wii for chicks?
According to Nintendo, it’s Wii system accounts for 80% of the female console market in the United States.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced at the BMO Capital Markets meeting that the Xbox 260 nabbed 11% of the female demographic while Sony’s Playstation 3 took 9%.
“This didn’t happen by accident,” said Fils-Aime. “It’s the result of a deliberate attempt to expand the market.”
The figures also revealed that the number of female home console primary players in the US amounts to 11.7 million, compared to 33.3 million men. These numbers indicate that 9.36 million of female primary players are Wii owners, 1.29 million own an Xbox 360 and 1.05 million a PlayStation 3.
The statistics do not cover hand held systems or PC ownership.
The Nintendo Wii, long considered the most family friendly of the big three, is the most successful home console of the current hardware generation, having sold over 56 million units worldwide.
