‘Star Trek 2′ won’t hit theaters until 2012

When will Star Trek 2 be released? The question lingers

rl_trek2Star Trek fans will have to wait a bit longer for the highly anticipated sequel to the critically praised box office sensation, Star Trek.

Originally thought to be released in 2011, director J.J. Abrams now says that the release of the loosely named Star Trek 2 won’t hit theaters until 2012.

“You use what you’ve got. The more time you have, the more time you have to use to hopefully make it a better movie,” says Abrams.

Producer/writer Damon Lindelof chimed in: “Yeah, I think that we would be hard pressed to get it on screens by 2011. If that’s the case, we’d better get to writing right now.”

Most of the crew isn’t feeling the pressure from rabid Trek fans who wouldn’t mind seeing the follow up this summer. Robert Oci, one half of the Star Trek writing duo, isn’t so sure of the release timeline: “Who knows? It could still be whenever. I haven’t heard any firm dates. It could be sooner or later.”

“One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something,” said Lindelof teasing fans . “And the question that you’re asking yourself is ‘Where am I in relation to the last time I left these guys? Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later?’ Who knows? So we’re not going to tell you.”
