Britney Spears is Facing the Law

Britney Looking to Sue Twitter, Be Sued by LADS

Britney SpearsOh Ms. Spears, when will you ever not give celebrity news something to talk about?

Currently Britney Spears finds herself in the midst of two potential lawsuits: one involving social networking site Twitter, the other involving the company that makes the jumbo-sized screens used at concerts.

If you are a Twitter user, you’ll already be aware that accounts set up by celebrities will say, near the username, that the account is verified to actually be that celebrity.

The program was set up by Twitter in June to prevent both lovers and haters of celebs from being able to impersonate them online.

Twitter was spurred to create the program in May, after Tony LaRussa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, sued the site when a user set up an account under his name. However, the account verification program hasn’t been completely effective at preventing people from posing as different celebrities.

Lately, hackers have found their way into numerous celebrity Twitter accounts, and have taken advantage of the access to post offensive comments as the celebrity.

Most recently, Britney was the victim of an account hacking. Someone got into her account and posted several messages saying that she was giving herself to Satan and couldn’t wait for the new world order to come about.

If she wanted to, Spears could sue Twitter for defamation or damages incurred due to the postings by her hacker. She hasn’t taken any steps to go forth with legal action, but the possibility exists.

Britney’s second legal issue sees her, along with Justin Timberlake, The Pussycat Dolls, and the Los Angeles Lakers, being sued by Large Audience Display Systems.

LADS produces the jumbo-screens used in stadiums during concerts and sporting events, and claims that Britney and the others facing the lawsuit have committed patent infringement through their use of the screens.

The company says that the celebs failed to obtain licenses for use of the screens, and is demanding royalties for the use of the screens by the aforementioned celebs.

From a site that gives us access to the details of her day, to a company that enables us to see her as a larger than life image, Britney’s just not having much luck.
