Surprise: ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ may not offer downloadable content

No DLC for Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIII, what does this mean for North America?

rl_ffFinal Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase dropped a bombshell on fans of the popular RPG: downloadable content will not be available for the Japanese version, but the studio is yet to make a decision on whether it will be available outside the territory.

“Unfortunately, it has been decided that no DL contents will be available for the Japanese version due out in December, while no decision has been made for the overseas versions,” Kitase says.

Asked if Square Enix felt pressure from rival firms like the makers of Fallout 3 and Mass Effect (both had a ton of downloadable content), the exec did not budge. “I do not feel any pressure. We intend to ensure that Final Fantasy titles we produce will be highly appreciated worldwide,” he said. “Hence we always expose ourselves to inspirations from western products in attempts to digest and apply them for Final Fantasy.”

Final Fantasy XIII hits shelves on March 9, 2010.
