Bullplop? More potential casting news for Spider-man 4: Rachel McAdams as Black Cat

Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Wedding Crashers) and Romola Garai (Amazing Grace) are reportedly in talks to play the superheroine Black Cat in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4.

30-year-old McAdams appears to be the front-runner for the part of Felicia Hardy, a former girlfriend of Peter Parker (you sly fictional dog) who is an accomplished cat burglar…hence the name Black Cat.

In the comics, the cleavage happy Black Cat has always been a bit of a mercenary who walks the fine on legalities. She’s also jonesing for some Spidey.

Felicia Hardy is often seen as a woman obsessed with Spider-Man always trying to keep his affection. For example she once set up Spider-Man to be caught red-handed so he could become an outlaw and live forever with her. She is also superficial, asking Parker to put his mask back on as she couldn’t live with the thought of Spider-Man being an average guy. This is due to her greedy personality, from stealing many precious items as they get the better of her and she becomes reckless in her relationships. Even so, her obsession with Spider-Man shows that she is determined and has a strong will, and shows that nothing will get in her way.

Despite speculation that the Canadian has the role in the bag, she may have competition from British actress Romola Garai, who revealed in her Observer column that she had recorded an audition for the movie.

“[I] put myself ‘on tape’ for a part in Spider-Man 4,” said the 27-year-old. “This is the acting equivalent of the London Marathon in that it’s important to try your best as long as you understand that you aren’t going to win.”

Spider-Man 4 will feature Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst returning as your friendly neighborhood Spider-man and gal pal Mary Jane Watson.

The movie is scheduled to open on May 5, 2011.
