You sank my ‘Battleship’: Peter Berg’s adaptation to feature aliens?

Aliens to battle an international naval fleet in ‘Battleship’?

rl_battleship-peter-bergDirector Peter Berg, who is known for chugging a few Red Bulls with his cereal, may be smoking to much peyote or watching too many Roland Emmerich/Michael Bay movies.

According to an unnamed source (grains of salt should be included), Latino Review is reporting that Berg’s big-screen adaptation of everyone’s favorite naval game, Battleship, will not feature your regular run-of-the-mill naval fights. Instead, it will be something out of this world.

The film will not merely focus on two countries matching wits on the open seas, it will have an international fleet (wait) fighting (for) against (it) aliens. Aliens…

Aliens. The toy trash craze is really heading into weird territory. With movies like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, one could understand why filmmakers and studios were so hellbent on making idiocy the genre du jour for audiences purely for the sake of shilling toys and creating a profitable brand. For Battleship, I was hoping there would be a bit more gravitas. Sure, it could be like District 9 and contain some pop-politics and a thoughtful undercurrent, but let’s get real: It’s going to be another Independence Day-ish flick made for audiences in love with dem’ dar’ things blowin’ up rather than anything relevant. Then again, blowing things up, superheros and aliens may represent the new relevancy. Meh and, of course, bah!

I really miss the days of films showing two naval captains playing a game of torpedo chess (get your mind out of the gutter) with only a sense of national pride to guide them. That and drowning.

Production on Battleship is set to begin this spring with a theater release in 2011.
