The Crow to Fly Again: Drop Goth for Documentary Style

A remake of The Crow? So it ain’t so!

k

To me, The Crow was all about the dark imagery, music (my all time favorite movie soundtrack), and the tragic death of Brandon Lee. I don’t think one can think of a better time to bring The Crow back than right now. As it turns out, Stephen Norrington must be thinking the same thing. It’s the golden era of comic-to-movies. You’re just livin’ in it.

Variety is reporting that the man behind The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Stephen Norrington, is on board to write and direct a new and “reinventioned” The Crow. Norrington has dropped off the movie radar for quite some time due to the embarrassment that League became. His named was briefly attached to the Clash of the Titans remake but was later switched to another boss.

The Crow, which spawned two direct-to-video sequels, was about a rocker who was killed by street thugs while attempting to rescue his girlfriend, only to come back as a vengeful spirit.  A graphic novel creation, Crow was a heavy goth character that millions of emo kids have attached themselves to. (Much like the Watchmen symbol) Will Norrington recapture that magic?

Norrington resolved to focus on independent projects, and sparked to an approach on “The Crow” from Relativity production chief Tucker Tooley and Pressman. Norrington had a relationship with Pressman when they came close to making “Mutant Chronicles” several years ago. Both embraced Norrington’s vision of the antihero, which Norrington said will be different than the film Proyas made.

“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style,”
