Screen Gems to release ‘Resident Evil Begins’: Will Milla Jovovich return for a fifth time?
‘Resident Evil’ gets a reboot?
It’s hard to believe there is enough pent-up demand for Resident Evil to warrant a re-imagining, but then again, I thought a reboot of Star Trek couldn’t possibly be the success that it turned out to be. I also thought Salma Hayek would have returned one of my 3,582 letters I’ve written her.
The good people at Bloody Disgusting reports that Screen Gems is tinkering with the idea of creating a reboot of the hit zombie series based off of the Capcom video game. Mmmm hm, that’s right, a frackin’ reboot for an already successful series. What would provoke the studio to turn back the watch on the franchise? Does Jovovich want out? Is she too expensive?
Nay to both.
In an interview with ShockTillYouDrop, Jovovich explained why she returned for a fourth entry in the series with Resident Evil: Afterlife. “The movie makes money,” she said. “If it makes more money than the last one, you’d think that people want to see another one, so we’ll do another one. There’s been a lot of interest online, there’s been a lot of letters from fans… film company. It’s not like I said, ‘Hey, honey! Let’s do another one right away!’ I mean, it’s an expensive film and it’s all business and if the third one didn’t do well, there wouldn’t be another one.”
Jovovich is married to Resident Evil director and writer Paul W.S. Anderson.
The project is currently titled Resident Evil: Begins and will have an elite military squad fighting a supercomputer and hundreds of smarty-pants scientists who have turned into zombies.
