‘Bad Boys III’ on deck for Columbia
Will Michael Bay be back for Bad Boys 3?
Columbia Pictures will be developing a third chapter in the Bad Boys saga. Screenwriter Peter Craig is already working on a script. While still in the early stages, Columbia is hoping that the story will entice director Micheal Bay to helm the feature and land Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.
At the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, Will Smith expressed interest in a third entry in the action-tastic series. “We need Bad Boys 3, ” he said. “I was just watching Bad Boys 2 with my son and I told him you can’t open a movie better. That’s the best movie opening ever!”
A classic case of a split between mainstream audiences and critics (the Bay Effect), 1995’s Bad Boys made an impressive $141 million worldwide despite mostly negative reviews. Bad Boys II arrived in 2003 and made a staggering $273 million worldwide despite, again, poor reviews.
Color me an optimist but the prospect of a Bad Boys III is exciting news. The first two films, though heavily flawed, were pretty fun, thanks in part to the duo’s improvisation skills. When Bad Boys dropped, it showcased Smith as an action star, something that has worked well for him ever since.
